“For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the hear(Hebrews 4:12)”
The Bible tells us not only about the living God but also about the living Word of God, which is active and moving. Let’s think about what it means to us.
1. There is usually a Bible or several Bibles in Christian homes. These days we don’t have to bring our Bibles to church because of high-tech devices that allows for scripture to show up on a screen. But the Bible—sitting on the corner of our desk or on a bookshelf—is not a living book by itself. When we pick it up, open it up, and read it, it becomes an active and living Word. You can think of your pantry, which has many kinds of food inside, but if you do not pull it out and cook it, that food is not any more nutritious for your body and health. It is not a source of energy. When you cook it, then it affects your body.
2. The Living Word of God penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. Firstly, the soul and spirit—these are the invisible and intangible parts. God’s Word will move our soul and spirit and give us a living existence. Also, it penetrates joints and marrow, which is the visible and tangible part. God’s living and active Word can heal our physical bodies from any disease and rehabilitate them. Can you believe it? If your physical body is sick, God’s Word can heal you even from cancer. Can you believe it? It is true. The Bible tells us so.
But how can we make the Bible work in our soul, spirit, joints, and marrow? This is the answer. We can behave so that God’s Word can move in our lives.
As you know, in English, we call the Bible the Word, but in Greek there are two different words that are translated as ‘Word’: One is logos, and the other is rhema. They are similar, but logos is used to mean the written Word of God—every word, every sentence in the Bible. But when you open your mouth and speak the Word, it’s called rhema. Also, this rhema will be your personal experience with the Word of God and the evidence of God’s working.
When we read the Bible aloud, it becomes a living and active rhema. When we meditate on it, our thoughts are alive and moving, so it becomes a living and moving rhema.
When we open our mouth and share it with others, it becomes a living and active rhema.
Let’s beat the dust out of our Bibles, open our mouths, and read the Word of God. Let’s meditate on it. Let’s share it together. I’m looking forward to seeing what God will do.
