- The Titanic: a movie in which Leonardo DiCaprio starred.
- The Ark: a dramatic Bible story in which Noah starred.
These two ships are good illustrations to use to teach how to choose faithfully and how to live as a Christian.
The Titanic was a luxurious cruise ship which set sail from Europe to America in 1909. There were a total of 2,028 passengers aboard, and the trip had two meanings for two different people groups. For the rich, it was an extravagant cruise to enjoy their time and privileges, and for the poor, it was the beginning of their dream of a better future. There was a lot of competition to get on the ship, and if someone was successful, it made them proud of themselves. Everybody wanted to go on this ship, but the Titanic, which hit an iceberg unexpectedly became a fight between life and death in an instant.
The ark was built by a righteous man called Noah. He made the ark enthusiastically and urged people to board the ark, but the people at that time laughed at him, and no one wanted to get on. Only Noah and his family ended up boarding. This ship also encountered a dangerous situation, a flood, and it floated around the world for forty days and forty nights. But it is one of the most mysterious historical events as 100% of the people on the ship survived.
The appearance of Titanic was similar to Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden of Eden, meaning that “was pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom (Gen 3:6).” But right after Adam and Eve ate from the tree, the peaceful order of the garden of Eden broke, and a new crisis, death, came to humanity.
On the other hand, the Noah’s ark looked like just a ship that a crazy man made for no reason, so people did not have any desire to climb aboard. At that time, people had never experienced floods and would not have known what they were. So boarding the ark looked like a foolish choice. And even worse, there were pairs of every creature inside the ark, so it would have been an unsanitary environment with various smells.
If you stood in front of these two different ships and needed to choose one of them, which would you board? What is your standard of selection? Do you want to choose a luxurious cruise, the Titanic, which many people dream of boarding but aren’t sure if it will get them through a dangerous situation? Or would you choose the ark, which guarantees your survival in any dangerous situation though it looks dirty and unimpressive?
Our discerning eye and faith decides our future. Remember that Jesus “had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.” Isaiah 53:2” but He is the only Savior who can rescue us.
(Genesis 7:1-7)
